Air Fryer Flounder

My air fryer flounder is buttery, flaky, and perfectly seasoned for a lighter dinner that’s anything but boring. It needs just 6 ingredients plus salt and pepper. And, it’s a family favorite that’s ready in about 15 minutes with no breading or flour needed!
If you love flounder in the air fryer, I know you’ll love my air fryer haddock, air fryer halibut, and air fryer cod recipes that all have no breading as well!

Why this is my go-to way to make flounder

Air fries in minutes – Thin flounder fillets only need 8-10 minutes at 350°F in the air fryer. I can have dinner on the table super fast without worrying about a long marinade or complicated prep.
Easy to prep – I use just 6 easy ingredients plus salt and pepper that can be mixed in one bowl then added to the flounder before being air fried. No breading means less bowls for clean-up, and I love a good weeknight dinner with less clean up like that!
Light and flaky – Flounder has a mild flavor and delicate texture that doesn’t feel heavy. I skip the breading completely and use garlic lemon butter to add plenty of richness while letting the fish be the star.
My air fryer flounder is one of my go to air fryer dinner recipes when I want a light, easy dinner that’s still super satisfying. Flounder is a thin, mild fish that cooks in minutes that stays tender and full of flavor thanks to the garlic lemon butter.
My kids, especially Leah, can be a little skeptical when seafood is on the menu, but they never say no to flounder in the air fryer. The fillets get perfectly flaky and aren’t overwhelmingly fishy, plus the butter adds just the right amount of richness!
The trick is knowing exactly how long to cook those thin fillets and keeping them from sticking. Once I figured out both, this became one of my easiest fish dinners!
How long to cook flounder in the air fryer
I air fry flounder at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes. Thinner fillets may be ready closer to 8 minutes while thicker pieces may need the full 10 minutes, so I start checking early to avoid overcooking the fish.
Flounder cooks much faster than thicker fish like salmon or cod. I know it’s ready when the fish is opaque all the way through and flakes easily with a fork. I also use an instant-read thermometer to confirm the center is 145°F.

Air fry flounder ingredients
- Flounder – I use skinless fillets that cook quickly, plus I don’t have to deal with the hassle of separating the fillets from the skin after cooking.
- Salt and black pepper – Simple seasoning brings out the mild flavor of the flounder without overpowering it.
- Butter – Melted butter adds richness and helps keep the surface of the thin fillets from drying out.
- Lemon juice – I use fresh lemon juice to brighten the buttery sauce and balance the richness.
- Garlic – Fresh minced garlic gives the butter mixture plenty of savory flavor.
- Paprika and Italian seasoning – This simple seasoning combination adds color and herby flavor without covering up the flounder.

Recipe tips
- Pat the fillets dry before adding the butter and seasonings. This helps the fish brown instead of steam and lets the seasonings stick easier.
- Preheat the air fryer. I always preheat my air fryer just like the oven so the fish can cook up evenly inside and out and brown without overcooking the fish.
- Leave space between each fish fillet. This lets the hot air circulate around the fish cooking it evenly.
- I cook mine with aluminum foil. Flounder can be cut thin and delicate, so I find the foil helps it stay in one piece and doesn’t stick to the basket. Parchment paper or greasing your air fryer can help too. I just prefer the easier cleanup with foil.
Variations
- Swap flounder for another thin white fish. I use tilapia or sole when flounder isn’t available, but I always start checking for doneness early since thin fillets cook quickly.
- Give the fish a lemon pepper flavor. I replace the Italian seasoning with lemon pepper or replace the garlic butter with lemon pepper sauce.
- Make the flounder Cajun-style. I sometimes sprinkle on Cajun seasoning instead of paprika and Italian seasoning for a little extra heat.
- Serve air fryer flounder in fish tacos. This mild, flaky fish is perfect as the star ingredient in fish tacos for a Mexican-inspired twist.
- Mix fresh herbs into the butter. I use parsley, dill, or chives when I have them on hand for a fresher flavor.
What to serve with flounder in the air fryer
I love eating air fried flounder with regular coleslaw, pineapple coleslaw, or cucumber and onion salad for some fresh crunchiness while Ben’s favorite side is my mango habanero salsa.
For a heartier side, my Cajun corn on the cob or air fryer sweet potato fries are always a crowd-pleaser!

Air fryer flounder FAQs
Can I use frozen flounder fillets without thawing them first?
I recommend thawing frozen flounder in the refrigerator overnight before air frying it. Because the fillets are so thin, cooking them from frozen can release too much water and leave the fish soggy instead of tender and flaky.
Do I need to flip flounder in the air fryer?
I don’t flip my flounder because the fillets are so thin and delicate, they can easily tear when turned. The circulating hot air cooks the fish through without flipping, so I usually leave them alone.
How do I keep the delicate flounder fillets from sticking to the basket?
I place my flounder on a piece of aluminum foil molded to fit inside the air fryer basket. This gives the delicate fillets a solid surface to cook on and makes them much easier to lift out of the air fryer without tearing.
When it’s time to serve, I use a wide spatula and gently lift each fillet from underneath. This works much better than trying to grab the fish with tongs.
How do I know when flounder is done cooking?
I know my flounder is done when the fish is completely opaque and flakes easily with a fork. The internal temperature should reach 145°F in the thickest part of the fillet.
I start checking the fish early because flounder can go from tender to rubbery quickly. If it still looks translucent or mushy in the center, I air fry it for another minute and check again.
