Forgot to thaw the cod again? I’ve been there plenty of times. Frozen cod in the air fryer goes from freezer to dinner in about 20 minutes with just 3 ingredients and no thawing at all. I season it straight from frozen and cook it in two quick stages so it turns out tender and flaky.

If your cod is already thawed, use my air fryer cod instead. And if you want the full fish and chips treatment, I have air fryer fish and chips too.

Why you’ll love this family favorite recipe!

You don’t have to thaw anything – You cook the cod straight from frozen, so this is the dinner I reach for when I forget to plan ahead. It only takes 20 minutes from start to finish!

Only 3 ingredients – I use a store bought blackened seasoning to get great flavor just using frozen cod, oil, and the seasoning. If you don’t have any on hand, I included how to make it yourself with measurements below.

No breading needed – The blackened seasoning gives so much flavor there’s no need for breading. That also means it’s a lighter dish with much less clean up!

I keep bags of frozen cod loins in the freezer for exactly these nights, the ones where I didn’t plan ahead and everyone is hungry now. You don’t have to thaw it or make a batter, and the air fryer does the rest. It’s earned a spot in my regular rotation of easy air fryer dinners for that reason alone.

The blackened seasoning brings a warm, smoky flavor with a little heat, and a squeeze of lemon at the end cuts right through it.

Ingredients needed to make frozen cod in the air fryer: frozen cod, oil, and blackened seasoning.

Air fryer cod ingredients

  • Frozen cod loins – Loins are the thick, meaty part of the fillet, so they hold together better than thin tail pieces and turn out juicy. You don’t need to thaw them first.
  • Olive oil – A quick rub of oil helps the seasoning stick to the icy fish and helps the surface brown in the air fryer.
  • Store-bought blackened seasoning – This is where all the flavor comes from. A good blackened blend already has the paprika, garlic, onion, and a little heat mixed in, so you skip measuring out a bunch of spices. Use your favorite brand.
  • Lemon wedges – A squeeze at the end when serving brightens up the fish. I wouldn’t skip it.

How long to cook frozen cod in the air fryer

Cod is done when it flakes easily with a fork and looks opaque all the way through. You want it firm but not dried out. Because every air fryer runs a little differently and cod loins vary in thickness, start checking at the lower end of the time and go from there.

The most reliable way to know is temperature. The FDA says fish is safe at 145°F at the thickest part, so an instant read thermometer takes the guesswork out of it.

Recipe tips

  • Season it while it’s still frozen. Rub the oil and seasoning on right out of the freezer so it sticks to the icy surface instead of sliding off.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. Lay the cod in a single layer with space around each piece so the air can circulate and cook it evenly. Cook in batches if you need to.
  • Trust the two-stage cook. The lower first temp is what lets the middle thaw before the outside overcooks, so don’t skip straight to high heat.
  • Check with a fork or a thermometer. When the fish flakes easily and looks opaque it’s done, and 145°F confirms it.

What to serve with air fryer frozen cod

Cod is mild, so it goes with just about any easy side. Here are a few I reach for.

How to store and reheat leftover cod

Leftover cod keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Fish dries out fast when you reheat it wrong, so I go back to the air fryer at a lower temp for a few minutes instead of the microwave. I walk through the timing in my guide to reheating fish in the air fryer.

How to make your own blackened seasoning

reach for a store-bought blend to keep this quick, but this is the homemade version I started with and I still like it. Here’s what goes in it:

  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

Whisk it all together in a small bowl and use it exactly like the store-bought kind. This makes about 3 ½ tablespoons, and you’ll use 2 to 3 of that on two cod fillets, so there’s only a little left over. I usually double or triple the batch and keep it in a small jar so it’s ready the next time.

The cayenne is the one thing I’d adjust to taste. Cut it back if your family doesn’t want much heat, or add more if you like it spicy.

Do you have to thaw cod before air frying?

No, you don’t. That’s the whole point of this recipe. You cook the cod straight from frozen and season it while it’s still icy.

What temperature do you cook frozen cod at in the air fryer?

I use two temperatures. I start at 350°F for 4 minutes to thaw it through, then bump it to 370°F to finish. That keeps the outside from overcooking before the middle is done.

How do I know when the cod is done?

It should flake easily with a fork and look opaque all the way through. To be sure, check that the thickest part reads 145°F.

Can I cook more than two fillets at once?

You can, as long as they still fit in a single layer with room around them. If they’re crowded, the air can’t circulate and the fish steams instead of cooking evenly, so cook them in batches.

Can I use a different white fish?

Yes. Other frozen white fish like haddock or pollock work with the same method. Just watch the time, since thinner fillets cook faster.

Easy Frozen Cod in the Air Fryer (3 Ingredients!)

Frozen cod in the air fryer is my answer for the nights I forget to thaw anything. You season the fillets straight from frozen, then cook them in two stages so the outside doesn't overcook before the middle catches up. It takes about 20 minutes and three simple ingredients, cod, olive oil, and blackened seasoning. I serve it with lemon wedges and an easy air fryer veggie.

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen cod loin filets
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons blackened seasoning

For Serving

  • Lemon wedges

Instructions

  • Rub the olive oil over the frozen cod, then coat the fillets with the blackened seasoning right away so it sticks to the icy surface.
  • Place the cod in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space around each piece.
  • Air fry at 350°F for 4 minutes.
  • Turn the heat up to 370°F and air fry for 8 to 10 minutes until the fish is opaque all the way through and flakes easily with a fork, at 145°F.
  • Serve with lemon wedges, if desired.

Notes

Season the cod while it’s still frozen so the seasoning grabs on. Cook it in two stages, a lower temp first to thaw it through and a higher temp to finish, so the outside doesn’t overcook before the middle is done. Cod is safe at 145°F at the thickest part. Don’t crowd the basket, and cook in batches if you need to so the air can circulate.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at a lower temp so the fish doesn’t dry out.
